Technorati has released Technorati Where’s the Fire (Technorati WTF). Technorati describes the service in the following way: “WTFs explain the buzz around people, things, and events.”
These WTFs are written by any Technorati user that feels inclined to write about any topic that appears on Technorati.
John Chow calls this idea a “Digg clone” (and it is to a certain extent, with the ‘vote for this’ button replacing the ‘Digg this’ button), but there does seem to be more going on here than that.
The obvious difference being that Technorati WTF is aiming for blog content, and not the more newsish stuff that is on Digg.
It also appears that Technorati is attempting to do two things with this product. As this entry points out however, many bloggers aren’t really seeing the point of this tool.
Allowing users to share knowledge about a particular topic is a good thing — but is this necessarily the way to go about it?
If I really want to know why a particular phrase is popular, a quick search in the (admittedly rather dysfunctional) Technorati search engine usually clears it up.
And personally, I don’t really find the WTFs that useful.
Take a look at this post for example, about getting more out of Vista — while it’s entertaining, it doesn’t really inform me that Vista is a popular term on Technorati because Windows Vista was just released.
