I stated a few days ago that I had now integrated MyBlogLog into this site. You may have noticed that MyBlogLog didn’t last very long here.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the concept of MyBlogLog — it does contribute to a sense of community.

While it’s a great idea, the HTML that they provide doesn’t validate very well. Getting XHTML-friendly code to integrate into this site has proven to be tough to do.

Similarly, LinkWords from LinkWorth don’t validate either (to LinkWorth’s credit, they are working on a WordPress plugin for LinkWords).

Nor does the HTML that YouTube provides you for integrating a video into your site. FeedBlitz has a similar problem with their code.

While I understand that the creators of this code are often pressed for time and want to get their product out (and they are providing great services and products at no cost to me, so I can’t really complain too much), I would like to see these creators adopt XHTML-friendly standards.

So I’ve pulled the plug on MyBlogLog for now, until things get more validation-friendly. And by the way, if you want to get valid XHTML for YouTube, check out this post by Bernie Zimmerman.

Thanks Collis — but I have to dish out most of the credit where it’s due. The customized Gridlock theme that now powers this site was customized by my good friend (and great designer) Greg MacGregor (you can check out Greg’s site). I’ve still got a bit more customization to go (I’d like to centre the theme for instance).

Glad you like the new design! :)

I prefer having such widgets be included via Javascript. Makes the validator happier :-)

Good point Thomas. Although many times, I find that the authors of HTML plugins (like the buttons you see on my sidebar) could just make the HTML valid by doing simple things like closing an ‘img’ tag. But Javascript certainly makes things easier. :)

Validation is important. Speaking about it more so – hopefully services like mybloglog will read more reviews like this one, and start validating!
