Thanks Stephanie. And good point about fixing mistakes -- implementing a content management system is never an easy task, and we're always bound to make mistakes when setting things up.

The important part though, is keeping these things in mind so that the number of mistakes made can be a minimal, and hopefully the mistakes will end up being less serious.

I also agree completely with your point that the implementer often doesn't understand the needs of the user well enough to know if the tool is going to be useful to that user. Sitting down with people and understanding how they currently do their work is essential.

Thanks for emphasizing the importance of figuring out how users actually work and determining their actual needs before implementing a tool for them to use. I'm learning first-hand some of the obstacles and challenges that can occur when we try and guess what people need and then give them tools based on this guess.

I'm noticing that it is sometimes difficult to bridge the gap between what you, the implementor, thinks is a great tool with huge potential and the user who has a set way of working and does not need or have time to learn about new tools.

I'm also learning that while it's great to have brainstorming sessions about what we think a new tool can and should be able to do, it's important not to forget to be realistic. This may mean needing to prioritize what is essential and what would just be cool to be able to do. It may also mean really sitting down and figuring out how people really work. Often times the implementors are not the people who will be using these new tools on a daily basis.

Thanks for a great reminder. Will the next article be about how to go back and fix these mistakes?!
